How to choose stronger synonyms for school writing

Start with your audience

The “best” synonym depends on who will read your work. A science report, a personal narrative, and a persuasive paragraph each expect a different tone. Before you swap words, decide whether you need neutral, formal, or vivid language.

Check meaning, not just length

Longer words are not automatically better. If a simpler word matches your meaning, it often improves clarity. When you use a thesaurus, verify the new word in context—many synonyms carry subtle differences in positive or negative feeling, or in how formal they sound.
